Armored Wizards? Empty Armored Wizards?

Post by SubtleSpellWildSurge Mon Jul 15, 2024 9:42 pm

I'm seeing a ton of wizards running around in heavy armor. I think it's nonsense. Metal armor makes it way harder to express your aesthetic flair. Emphasis on your, because I could just dye my armor or give it a nice metal trim or whatever if I wanted to with my magic. I just don't want to.

Is it me, or are there too many wizards out there trying to pretend that they're knights. I even see some using weapons to cast spells. I was fine when people moved from staves to tomes, and those fairy wands are ok too, but I draw the line at swords and sorcery.

I admit, it's a bit of a change in how things used to be.

Back in my day no wizard, nor sorcerer, nor cabalist, nor druid, nor arcanist, arcavist, alchemist, forecaster, far caster, lightbender, wavesender, shade bringing, spell slinger, rambler, shambler, fumigator, terminator, or arcane translator would even have considered taking up arms in addition to the arts of magic.

But times change. Swords are trendy, we all simply have to accept it.

I don't think we'll truly be able to judge the efficacy of their ways until a few hundred years form now when we take a census of how many wizards who waved weapons around are still around to tell the tale.

The use of blades as spell conduits has a long history, bolines and athames are the first that come to mind, as well as the plethora of ritual daggers. It only seems natural that this sort of implementation be extended to swords and such. The armour I don't get personally, but that's just my own taste.

I hear some wizards have started to use guns, just whipping out Deagles in the middle of arcane duels, what are your thoughts on that?

THOSE DAMNABLE KLINGKLANGING WALKING BUFFONS!

Any proper spellcaster wears ROBES or at the very least leather. How could any spellcaster hear THE QUASI-ENTANGLED STRUM OF THE WOVEN ARCANE IDEAL above the KLUNK OF THEIR WHEIGHTED DEMISOLID ADORNMENTS.

While the nature of one's wand is up for debate, no spellcaster worth their stardust would be caught dead in those SEMI-MOBILE METALLIC NOISE MAKERS.

Hey more room for more runes and engravings.
My Gramps never uses it, but he's got a full plate mail given to him as a insult. Jokes on that lord he just decked it out with so many runes. I'm pretty sure it could tank a disintegrator spell with ambient mana.

A nice modern and practical in between I've found for the full plate is just my matrix ass leather trench coat decked out in runes on pins and patches. You get all the swishy flourish of the classic robes and a fair deal of the protection a suit of armour might provide.

In this modern age full-plate, while being inefficient for anyone untrained in it, also draws far to much attention to oneself. Laymen's clothing weaved with mystical silk is lightweight, discrete, and enchanted with ease.

I will admit a Spellblade in a fine breastplate does strike a pleasing figure on occasion though.

Honestly armored casters always gave me the same vibes as overzealous gym bros. Wow, you can lift so many heavy things, you're so fit and athletic, we get it. You don't need to rub it in everyone else's faces. That just makes you annoying.

A Wizard should have no armor heavier than silken robes, burdensome things of metal that do little for one of our skills.

A caster ought to defend him, her, them, or itself with only the spells on the spellbook. I have not heard of a thing single wizard in armor worth their salt in spells, these wizards would fail the Five Ordeals of antiquity.

Hello all,

While it isn't very traditional, it has been quite pleasant hearing some of my armored acquaintances grow and flourish due to the muscle training they are undertaking. They seem happy, and so I'm proud of them. Though, I am unfamiliar with these spell sword types, my muscular friends have been very fascinated with magical heavy construction gear.

Just my thoughts,

Some of you guys make good points. I'm ok with using a sword as a staff, but if you wear armor I'll learn a spell to fry your ass.

If you're a wizard with a gun, you're not a wizard though.

I mean hey more variety is the spice of life, they mostly crumble to Heat Metal anyways so it's not like it's a big deal lmao.

I like wizards in armor, my favorite class is Magus. Such a cool flavor, so many cool opportunities.

Armor has its own aesthetic flair! My ex-husband was very interested in the properties of metals, and used to mix his own alloys to run around in. I still enjoy the clinks and clangs. <3

As many have said before times change. I will admit I was also skeptical at first. Fortunately it was my daughter that broke my prejudice against the practice.

She often wore metal breastplates and wielded a short sword in one hand whilst having a spell in the other. I believe we practitioners of magic should be more open to the youth's ideas. While I would never wear armor myself, it brings comfort and dignity to those who wish to wear it.
