I posit this question to all the spellcasters present and who shall be present: Do you own a familiar, and what are your thoughts on the practice of binding a companion to yourself?

Lord Tellius and I refuse to see eye to eye on this issue, and I would welcome outside thoughts on the matter.

The prices for arcane materials are too high these days. I'd have summoned a familiar if I could, but I've just settled for a cat. His name is Francis and he's an asshole.

Hello Archmage Accalon,

Over at the INT-U, I've been graciously awarded a the Henzbac Award to fund for my lovely Animated Cookie familiar! He is my darling child, I fear for his Edible Life constantly.

May your inquiry prove fruitful,

While I do not myself have a familiar presently, the master I studied under for several years did. I think this practice is ultimately quite normal for casters of all varieties, it simply should not be undertaken without adequate rumination on the pros and cons of doing so.

Having a familiar does mean one must adjust their lifestyle in order to accommodate the unique needs of another life, and not everyone can do so reasonably.

Hire apprentices, they're cheaper to maintain. Especially the ones with no talent. You can pay them in food and board.

Personally, I never understood the moral quandary, and my familiar is invaluable. Tabitha keeps the living space clean with her rat catching skills, and she's never been one to complain about being used as a living mana source.

I suppose if one is concerned, you could bind an Imp to your service, and they double as alchemical parts when they decide to get rebellious~

BAH. THE BELLIGERENT BEASTS ARE NAUGHT BY OCCCULAR OBSTACLES TO THE INNER INSIGHTS!

They are messy and icky, and their furs all stick to my robes. Best to serve them for soup than any magical purposes or companionship. The last time a pigeon got into the Observatorium..... welst, I shudderst to recall the CATASTROPHIC DAMAGE AND FORTNIGHTS OF FEATHERY DISRUPTIONS.

My my! the number of different experiences is truly surprising! I'll admit, in my experience I've done less so willing familiar summoning and more often having to take care of familiars who were abandoned... but I appreciate them nonetheless and I treat them as well as I can!

If your familiar likes ya, then there is no reason to question. I have travelled with many a creature, and all have found me to be in good humor and kindness as we traveled.

A familiar is a lot of responsibility and I think the average practitioner really needs to understand that before they go about attempting to summon one. If it were up to me I'd have tests and licenses in place to prove one was capable of properly caring for a familiar before they were allowed to even begin formulating a summoning. Too often does the popular image of the familiar lead ill prepared magicians to jumping on a trend they aren't prepared for.

Carrot wizard I feel like maybe you should have tried a familiar that doesn't eat carrots. Like a cat, or some kind of bird maybe.

My last incident with a Familiar did... not go as planned, a Mushroom creature that grew into his rebellious phase rather quickly. Became fascinated with firearms and more often bonded with an associate of mine than me. To say I grew bitter is incorrect, but it did not feel great.

You failing to discipline your familiar only shows you lack of discipline towards the magical arts, this is perfectly described as a "Skill Issue" clown

Show your commitment to your familiar and it will return the favor, prove that you are the caster it believes you are! bounce

Lest you let you failures consume you.

It seems as though you lacked conviction at the time. Your future creations should be made with a little less intellect. Like our dear Amalgam walking around here. If you would like to meet up, perhaps I could guide your hands to another servant~
